چکیده

A binary monolayer on an elastic substrate may separate into two phases, which self-assemble into ordered nanoscale patterns. We apply an elastic field to the substrate to guide the self-assembly process. The effect of arbitrary three-dimensional external loading is found to be characterized by a single two-dimensional parameter – a surface stain field of the substrate. A non-uniform strain field significantly influences the size, shape and orientation of self-assembled features, and may induce the formation of pattern colonies. It is shown that a pattern orientates normal to the strain gradient direction. An applied load anchors the position of a selfassembled pattern relative to the substrate, where a colony boundary resides on the strain gradient region. The work suggests a method of strain field design to make various monolayer patterns for nanofabrication. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Guided and magnetic self-assembly of tunable magnetoceptive gels

Self-assembly of components into complex functional patterns at microscale is common in nature, and used increasingly in numerous disciplines such as optoelectronics, microfabrication, sensors, tissue engineering and computation. Here, we describe the use of stable radicals to guide the self-assembly of magnetically tunable gels, which we call 'magnetoceptive' materials at the scale of hundreds...

On the Manipulation of Nanoscale Self-Assembly by Elastic Field

Morphological and compositional self-assembly can be manipulated by the long-range elastic field. This paper gives a universal formulation that determines the dependence of energetically favored orientation of those self-assembled structures on the elastic interaction. Elasticity anisotropy can lead to symmetry breaking and herringbone structures. A layered substrate can tune the feature size b...

Diamondoids and DNA Nanotechnologies

Diamondoids are cage-like saturated hydrocarbons consisting of fused cyclohexane rings. The Diamondoids family of compounds is one of the best candidates for molecular building blocks (MBBs) in nanotechnology to construct organic nanostructures compared to other MBBs known so far. The challenge is to find a route for self-assembly of these cage hydrocarbons and their applications in the bottom-...
